A rule of life is a pattern or set of practices to deepen Your Life with God. Famously, St. Benedict’s rule was ‘ora et labora’ - prayer and work.
Your Life with God Spiritual Exercises is a ‘gym for your soul’ - the Rule of Life is your workout!
The Spiritual Exercises are Strength, Stretching, Endurance, and Teamwork.
Each Exercise has four Practices,
~~~~~~~~~~
Stretching: Fasting, Silence, Giving, Revelation
Strength: Service, Study, Confession, Testimony
Endurance: Prayer, Sabbath, Witness, Scripture
Teamwork: Worship, Hospitality, Evangelism, Communion
~~~~~~~~~~~
and each Practice has four Sets of activities to engage your soul/
Your Rule of Life is which Sets and Practices you would like to engage, and for what period of time.
You could focus on Prayer for a season, for example. Or engage with Scripture every day for a month. Some people practice Confession once or twice a year, or consider Giving during Advent.
The idea of a Rule of Life is to create a particular pattern of faith practice and commit to it. It can be done individually - and also as a group.
For instance, many congregations have mission statements. You could, instead, have a group ‘Rule of Life’: how you commit to practicing the Christian faith together.
Join us live on the first Wednesday of every month at 4pm Eastern to talk about the concept of a Rule of Life - and to work on creating one of your own.
